WHAT IS CARBON DIOXIDE?
THE GAS
Carbon Dioxide, (CO2) is a molecule composed of one carbon atom bonded to two oxygen atoms. It is colourless, odourless, and non-flammable at standard conditions, existing as a gas. As a greenhouse gas, CO2 plays a crucial role in trapping heat in Earth’s atmosphere.
THE EMISSIONS
Excessive emissions of CO2 from human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, contribute to climate change and global warming through the greenhouse effect, and Earth’s ability to regulate its temperature.
IN INDUSTRY
In industry CO2 is utilised widely for a variety of processes including the carbonation and processing of beverages, refrigeration, food processing, and chemical synthesis.

CO2 IN THE BREWING INDUSTRY
CO2 IN THE BREWING INDUSTRY
PRODUCTION
The brewing industry produces CO2 during fermentation, when yeast converts sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. This natural process releases CO2 bubbles, providing beer with its characteristic effervescence.
Breweries use CO2 in the production of beer to adjust carbonation levels, purge vessels and pipework to ensure consistency and quality, and to extend shelf life in the final product. It also used in beverage service to maintain carbonation levels during dispensing and deliver a refreshingly carbonated beer.
Currently, breweries and hospitality venues purchase the majority of their CO2
MARKET FRAGILITY
The brewing industry is feeling the heat from a precarious CO2 supply chain. Crucial for modern beer production, CO2 shortages have caused major delays in production, pushed up costs, and even threatening beer shortages. This fragility stems from an over-reliance on specific parts of the supply chain, difficulties in transport, and unpredictable CO2 output from sources like ethanol plants and ammonia factories.

FOUR STAGES TO CO2 SURPLUS
1. EFFICIENCY AUDIT
Conduct a value stream mapping exercise to review process gas usage across your facility. This will help you optimise your usage, improve efficiency, minimise waste and unlock improved savings and environmental stewardship.
2. CO2 RECOVERY TECHNOLOGY
Install technology to capture, purify and store the CO2 being emitted during fermentation. Take full advantage of the gas you are producing; creating greater circularity and resilience to market pressures and fluctuations.
3. NITROGEN GENERATION TECHNOLOGY
For full brewery process gas autonomy and CO2 surplus, integrate nitrogen generation into your system in conjunction with CO2 you you have the potential to never rely on a 3rd party gas supplier again.
4. OPTIMISATION STRATEGY
Hit further economic and environmental goals by conducting a continuous improvement exercise maximising efficient gas usage to drive cost savings, waste reduction, and decarbonisation; aligning with sustainable objectives and enhancing operational performance.
